Reach Campground Guests Where They Are: Phone and Web
A fifth-wheel is parked at a rest stop. The driver has three campgrounds open in one thumb. Your loop photos look fine. The book button is a tiny desktop form that hops to a new tab and asks for a password. They do not wait. They call the park that already answered last weekend, or they tap the marketplace that already knows 50-amp.
A campground must meet people on the two doors they already use: a phone browser and a real call. Most adults now live on a smartphone. Younger guests are even more phone-only. The same age curve shows up in AI use. That is why the guest booking site and the owner tools both have to work on a phone, and why the inbound call still has to complete a stay.

Why is the phone the main computer now?
The phone is the main computer because most people already own one, many live on it all day, and a growing slice have no other way onto the web.
Pew's 2025 survey puts U.S. cellphone ownership at 98% and smartphone ownership at 91%, up from 35% in 2011. That is not a teen fad. That is almost everybody who might call you about a pull-through.
The sharper number is dependence. Sixteen percent of adults own a smartphone and do not subscribe to home broadband. Among 18 to 29 year olds it is 27%. Among households under $30,000 it is 34% (Pew's digital-divide read). Those guests are not "also on mobile." They are only on mobile.
Globally the same shape holds. DataReportal's April 2026 overview says 96.2% of internet users go online on a mobile phone at least some of the time, and mobile phones account for 51.6% of world web traffic. If your guest site was designed around a mouse and a wide monitor, you built it for the minority of sessions.
For a 40-site campground this is not a branding lecture. The person comparing 30-amp versus 50-amp at 9pm is in a truck cab, on a couch, or in a grocery line. They will not "come back on the laptop." They will book whoever finishes the job in that hand.
Where are these numbers going by generation?
They are going toward the phone, and the younger the guest, the less optional that is. Older guests still use phones. They just keep a desktop in the mix. That mix is shrinking behind them.
Pew's age cuts are blunt:

Read that as a campground forecast, not a sociology paper. Today's 18 to 29 year olds are the people who will be booking family RV weekends in ten years. They already treat the phone as the default computer. They are also the group most likely to have no home broadband at all.
Do not write off guests 65+. Seventy-eight percent still have a smartphone. They will still call. They will still ask about pets and hookups. They will bounce just as hard if the tap targets are tiny and the total shows up after they type a card.
The directional point is simple. Every year, more of your demand was raised on a phone. A park that only works from the office desktop is aging with the wrong machine.
Why are the website and the inbound call the two doors that matter?
Because that is where campground reservations actually happen. Online direct plus phone is the business. Walk-up is a rounding error. Marketplaces are a rented aisle, not your office.
RoverPass's 2026 report (calendar 2025, their platform) puts online direct at about 60% of reservations. Phone sits at 29%, up a hair from 28.5% the year before. Walk-ins collapsed. Their line is the right one: the phone is not a legacy channel. It is a preference channel.
That split matches how people actually live. Some guests want to tap dates, filter 50-amp, and pay. Some want a voice to confirm the pull-through will take the fifth-wheel. Both of those acts now start from the same device.
The website door is the browser on that phone. Not a separate "mobile strategy." The page either books in a thumb or it sends the guest to Hipcamp.
The call door is still a person asking site-specific questions. If nobody picks up, that door is voicemail, and voicemail is not a reservation (missed calls). If the voice cannot book, you already know that failure mode from after-hours.

What does a mobile guest site have to finish?
It has to finish the stay: dates, a real open site that fits the rig, the all-in number, and a deposit, without dumping the guest onto "call for availability."

- The nightly total is visible before the card form.
- Checkout does not require a new account and a desktop keyboard.
- Confirmation lands as email or text the guest can show at the gate.
If any of those fail, the guest does not file a UX ticket. They open the marketplace that already did this work. Reaching customers where they are is not a slogan. It is whether site 14 can be paid for with one hand.

What does the owner side have to do on a phone?
The owner side has to let you run the park from the same device the guest is using: see the calendar, take or move a stay, change a rate or a closed loop, and not wait until you get back to the office PC.
Independent parks do not staff a hotel-style night desk. The person who knows which back-in floods is also mowing, at the gate, in town for hardware, or in the truck. If the PMS only works on the office desktop, every after-hours change becomes a sticky note.
That is the other half of "meet them where they are." Guests are on phones. So are you. The booking site is useless if you cannot approve a hold, mark site 22 closed, or answer "do you still have 50-amp" from the same pocket.
What has to work in a phone browser, not a fat client:
- Today's board: arrivals, open pads, who is paid.
- A stay you can complete or move without a mouse.
- Policy truth you can actually edit: pets, hookups, seasonal dates.
- The same calendar the guest site already wrote.

How is the AI trend the same shape as the mobile trend?
AI adoption is following the same age curve phones already did: younger adults first, then the middle, with older adults slower but not zero. The difference is speed. Smartphones took a decade to go from 35% to 91%. Chatbots are compressing that into a few years.
Pew in early 2025 had 34% of adults ever using ChatGPT, including 58% under 30 and 10% of those 65+. A year later, any-chatbot use was 49% of adults: 66% of 18 to 29, 61% of 30 to 49, 42% of 50 to 64, 23% of 65+. About one in three adults under 50 now use these tools daily.
DataReportal puts monthly GenAI users at 2.42 billion in April 2026, more than double the year before. That is not a campground survey. It is the water the next guest is swimming in.
The correlation for a park owner is not "add a chatbot widget." It is this:
- The same cohorts who live on phones are the cohorts who already talk to software.
- They will expect a website that answers like a person and a phone line that does not hold.
- They will also still call when the rig is 40 feet and the site photo is ambiguous.
- Older guests will keep calling longer. That door cannot go away while you chase the new one.

- Desktop book path. Hover menus, tiny "select site" tables, forced accounts. The 9pm phone session dies. The marketplace does not.
- Call that cannot write the calendar. Staff recites 50-amp from memory, then forgets to enter it. Double book. Angry gate.

What should you do this week?
Do not buy an app. Sit in the truck with your own site and your own office on the phone you already carry.
- Open your guest book URL on your phone, off park Wi-Fi. Try to reserve a 50-amp pull-through with a pet. If you cannot pay in a few minutes, the website door is closed. Fix that first (the four jobs).
- Call your published number at 8pm. If it rings to voicemail, the call door is closed. Count last month's missed calls before you argue.
- From the same phone, open the owner tools. Can you see tonight's arrivals, close a pad, and move a stay? If you have to drive back to the desktop, the office is not mobile. You are.
- Split last 30 days by source: website, phone, marketplace, walk-in. If you cannot, start a clipboard. You cannot manage two doors you do not measure.
- Pick one policy that disagrees between the site and the voice (pets, hookups, check-in). Put the true version in one place both doors read.
- Send a confirmation that a guest can show from their phone at the gate. Paper in the office is not a confirmation.
- Re-run the phone book test after the fix. Screenshot the total before pay. If staff still say "just call us," the site is still a brochure.
